Antique french/english barometer, made by Antoine Carcano (1755-1820) in 1787 for Dollond in London.
Carcano was the tube supplier of Peter Dollond and in 1786 supplier of barometers and scientific instruments to the Royal Military Academy in Paris.
Carcano, Italian born, was located rue de la Roquette 37, le Faubourg St Antoine in Paris and later in Place Dauphine op l'Ile de la Cit�.

Il �tait d�origine italienne, comme de nombreux autres fabricants qui influenc�rent l�Europe dans ce domaine y compris l�Angleterre1. Initialement install� au 37 rue de la Roquette dans le Faubourg St Antoine � Paris2 , il d�m�nagea ensuite pour s'�tablir au 2, place Dauphine sur l��le de la Cit�.
� ses d�buts, Antoine Carcano signe ses instruments de son nom de famille Carcano, (voire Carcani)3.
La qualit� des verres de ses instruments est rapidement appr�ci�e et reconnue tant en France (il devient le constructeur de barom�tres et d�instruments scientifiques pour l��cole Royale militaire en 1786)4 et fournit Peter Dollond � Londres en tube pour ses barom�tres5.
� la R�volution fran�aise, il est incorpor� le 5 septembre 1792 comme citoyen soldat dans le 48e�bataillon de Popincourt comme gendarme de la Bastille. Un mois apr�s, le 12 octobre 1792, il adresse une lettre au secr�taire de la Convention nationale demandant l�envoi de sa p�tition aux Comit�s des proc�s verbaux de la Guerre et Militaire afin de pouvoir faire ses exp�riences6.
� la fin de la R�volution, il reprend ses activit�s de fabrications et d�inventions d�s le Consulat. Il signe ses �uvres de ��sieur Carcano��7.
Il retrouve rapidement sa client�le internationale dont Benjamin Thompson qui le 30 ao�t 1813 pr�sente un vase thermom�trique de fabrication Carcano destin� � la recherche de la chaleur sp�cifique des liquides ainsi que des corps solides8.
Il n�a de cesse d�inventer de nouveaux proc�d�s et de les promouvoir jusqu�� la fin de sa vie9. En 1820, Le professeur William Davis Merry Howard de Baltimore10 fait une publication et une description du thermom�tre diff�rentiel de Carcano qu�il vient de recevoir. Il le donne comme habitant rue de Halay sur l��le de la Cit�.

Oak 'Queen Anne barometer with seaweed marquetry decoration, silvered brass scales.

Original Quare-style ivory cistern that can close the tube for transport. This cistern can also be found in a Daniel Quare portable pillar barometer in the 'Museum of the History of Science' in Oxford. Pictures of this cistern can be found in 'Barometers in beeld' from Bert Bolle, 1983, pag. 13, ISBN 90-6087-922-8.
